“Rights Georgia” has launched Stateless.ge, a new Statelessness Portal

29 Mar, 2023

Persons who live in Georgia but do not possess citizenship of any country will be able to get comprehensive information about their rights and important public services through the special web portal - Stateless.ge.

The Statelessness Portal was created by “Rights Georgia” with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Through the portal, any interested person will learn about the procedure for obtaining the status of a stateless person, international and national legislation and current events in the field of statelessness, information on obtaining Georgian citizenship and various identity documents, as well as access to education, social protection, and health services. The portal is trilingual and includes content in Georgian, English, and Russian.

Due to a lack of citizenship, people face many obstacles to living freely, owning and disposing property, traveling, and accessing various services. At least 10 million people in the world today are stateless.

The number of stateless persons in Georgia is small, but Georgia, like other UN member states, is actively working to eradicate statelessness in the country and to create opportunities for stateless persons for them to freely and fully enjoy their rights.

“Rights Georgia” provides free-of-charge legal assistance to stateless people to obtain legal status which will enable them to exercise their rights. The organization also closely cooperates with the relevant state institutions for identification of stateless persons throughout the country. These activities are carried out with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) within the framework of the project – “Protecting and Empowering Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Humanitarian Status Holders, and Stateless Persons in Georgia”.
